John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando lets you level up four class roles — Strike, Medic, Operator, and Defender — each with unique abilities and skill trees that must be progressed independently. Class XP is earned by playing missions, completing objectives, killing enemies, and using your class abilities actively.
1. How Class Progression Works
Each class gains XP separately and caps at level 40. Leveling grants skill points that unlock abilities and unlock new variations of your Special Ability at key milestones (like levels 5, 10, and 15). Skill points are specific to the class you’re playing, so you’ll need to level each class individually if you want full access to every skill tree.
2. Best Missions for XP Farming
Certain missions have huge areas with enemy clusters that can reward you more XP than other missions.
2.1. Deliver Us – Act 3
This mission stands out because large waves of enemies are forced into tight, predictable areas, which maximizes kills, ability procs, and XP gain from events. Multiple combat phases spawn huge hordes of standard and elite infected, so your XP gain spikes rapidly as long as you stay engaged.
- Compact enemy clusters let you use area damage and abilities frequently.
- The end event gives free supplies and turret placements for easy kill farming.
- You can earn up to ~20K–30K class XP per run on Hard difficulty, making it the most efficient repeated grind.
2.2. Tips for XP Farming in Deliver Us Mission
- Place turrets or deploy gadgets at choke points near the final waves.
- Stay in the main horde “funnel” area to avoid scatter time.
- Use abilities as often as possible — every use triggers bonus XP.
2.3. The Pit – Act 3
The Pit is another high‑yield mission with multiple dense enemy events clustered close together, especially around the drilling site. Although it takes a little longer to complete than Deliver Us, it still generates a big XP payout and adds variety if you get bored of repeating the same map.
- Three major enemy events in the drilling area give lots of kills in quick succession.
- Includes a vehicle segment — ramming and running over zombies can also add XP.
- Boss fight spawns extra hordes, giving more XP opportunities.
3. Best Difficulty Settings for XP
Hard difficulty is the sweet spot for XP farming: it rewards significantly more XP than lower levels and doesn’t drag out missions as much as Very Hard. Very Hard gives slightly higher XP per mission, but typically increases mission time enough that your XP per hour drops. Consider it only if your team is well‑built and you enjoy the challenge.
4. Best Strategies for Farming Class XP
Every class earns XP not just from kills, but from actively using its core abilities during combat.
- Strike: Spam your signature offensive ability (like Power Spike or equivalent) to trigger kills and ability XP consistently.
- Medic: Apply heals often — every healing interaction contributes to XP gain.
- Operator: Use drones and long‑range/support tools into hordes to earn consistent XP.
- Defender: Deploy barriers and use defensive abilities while pushing through enemies.
The key idea is simple: stay active in fights and use your class’s tools frequently so you generate ability‑based XP on top of kill XP.
5. Best Weapons for XP Farming
Weapons also level up through usage — most weapon XP is tied to kills you make with them during a mission run. Area‑of‑effect and high kill potential weapons are ideal for XP farming:
- ACW‑20 Grenade Launcher: One of the strongest weapons for farming, thanks to explosive damage that wipes out groups of enemies quickly.
- Fast‑Fire Automatics: Assault rifles or SMGs with rapid fire help you maintain constant kills, which increases XP flow.
- Weapon Leveling Note: Weapons usually share XP based on kills per mission, so switching between primary and secondary during a run helps level both simultaneously and avoids the single‑weapon XP cap.
6. Best Setup for Weapon XP Farming
If your goal is to level weapons quickly, there’s a separate method worth doing:
- Mission: The Drop
- Difficulty: Story
- Mode: Solo or private session (for consistency and control)
Story difficulty keeps enemies weak and plentiful, which allows constant kills without slowing down the run.
6.1. The Drop Mission XP Farm Method
- Rush through the early objectives. You don’t need to clear every enemy and head quickly through the mission until you reach the narrow sludge corridor section after you get the vehicle.
- Abandon the vehicle near the narrow corridor. Once you leave the vehicle at the sludge passage with continuous Roamer spawns on one side, stop and hold that position. This area is your gold mine because enemies keep streaming in.
- Stay planted and farm kills. Position yourself where the Roamers spawn and fire into them non‑stop. The flow of enemies here is dense and continuous, which quickly drives weapon kills.
NOTE: Each weapon can only earn a limited amount of XP per mission: ~3,000 XP per weapon per run, which is roughly 150 kills equals the cap. Once you hit it, exit the mission and restart for another run.
7. Tips to Maximize XP Rate
- Repeat Efficiently: Rerunning missions you know well on Hard lets you finish quickly while keeping kill counts high.
- Play With a Team: Co‑op squads clear objectives and hordes faster, especially on Hard, which increases total XP per hour.
- Use Abilities Often: Each class’s core ability triggers bonus XP on use, so don’t hold back — use them whenever possible during waves.
- Stay in the Fight: Passive pacing reduces XP gained. Aggressive engagement with enemies yields far more experience.
