Insect Catching is one of the main hobbies in Heartopia, and it ties together exploration, weather tracking, and hobby progression. Some bugs are easy to pick up while roaming, but others only appear in very specific places, during certain time windows, or under the right weather. If you want to fill out your collection efficiently, you need to understand how the hobby works before you start chasing rare spawns.
This guide explains insect catching in Heartopia, how to catch bugs properly, which hobby skills and tools matter most, and where to find every insect by level, location, time, and weather.
1. Insect Catching Hobby Objectives
Before you can start catching bugs, you need to unlock the Insect Catching Hobby by progressing further through the game and completing town-related objectives. Once the hobby is available, Naniwa gives you the tool used for catching insects and introduces the basics of the system. He can be found on the east side of Garden Street.
Like the other hobbies in Heartopia, Insect Catching levels up over time. Raising your hobby level unlocks more bugs, improves your catching efficiency, and opens up extra skills and support items that help with difficult or rare insects. This is important because not every insect is available right away. Some are locked behind higher hobby levels, while others only appear during special weather or event conditions.
2. How to Catch Insects in Heartopia
There are two main ways to approach a catch in Heartopia.
Method 1: Quick Cast
- Equip your bubble-catching tool from the toolbox.
- Fire a bubble straight at the insect.
- If the bubble connects, the insect is caught and added to your inventory.
This method works best for insects that stay still or do not react quickly.
Method 2: Stealth Catch
- Hold the stealth button on your screen to enter stealth mode.
- Stealth mode slows your movement and charges the bubble.
- Move in slowly and keep the insect centered.
- Release the charged bubble when you are close enough.
This method is better for skittish insects that fly away if you rush them.
What To Do With The Insects
Every new catch helps build out your collection journal, and here’s what you can do after catching these bugs:
- Sell to Albert Jr. for Gold
- Display in Vivariums around your home if you want to keep favorite catches instead of selling everything.
3. Insect Hobby Skills and Tools
As your hobby level increases, the insect system gets easier to manage because you unlock both passive upgrades and support tools. These upgrades improve catch consistency, increase the value of your hunts, and make some rare insects easier to target.
Insect Catching Hobby Skills
- Netting Skill – Increases the range of the Insect Net so you can catch bugs from farther away.
- Insect Quality – Improves the odds of catching bugs with a higher level.
- Insect Net Maintenance – Increases the durability of the insect net.
- Double Catch – Gives you a chance to catch two insects instead of one.
Support Tools from Naniwa
- Inflatable Insect Attractor – Used to lure in bugs and is tied to at least one special insect spawn.
- Sense Booster – Helps with catching insects more efficiently.
The Inflatable Insect Attractor is important because Sulkowsky’s Morpho is tied to it. That makes it one of the most useful specialty tools if you are trying to fill out the collection instead of only catching common bugs.
4. Time of Day and Weather Rules for Insect Hunting
Not every insect is governed by the same spawn rules. Some can appear all day in any weather, but many of the rarer insects depend on time of day, weather, or both. Planning around those conditions makes a huge difference once you move past the early levels.
Time Periods
Insect spawn windows are split into four time blocks:
- Dawn – 12:00 AM to 5:59 AM
- Morning – 6:00 AM to 11:59 AM
- Afternoon – 12:00 PM to 5:59 PM
- Dusk – 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM
You can also read the current period from the time icons in the menu. The moon with zz is nighttime, the rising sun is morning, the full sun is daytime, and the moon with a single star is evening.
Weather Conditions
Most insect spawns fall into one of these weather groups:
- Any – The insect can appear regardless of weather.
- Rainy, Rainbow – The insect needs wet or rainbow conditions.
- Sunny, Rainbow – The insect needs clear weather or rainbow weather.
- Rainbow – The insect is tied specifically to rainbow weather.
5. Special Event Insects and Unique Spawn Conditions
Not every insect is found by roaming the overworld normally. Some are tied to the Bait the Insects event at Onsen Mountain. This event can begin periodically, and it can also be started directly at the location by paying a small fee.
Several insects in the collection are tied to this event, which means you will not find them during normal route farming unless the event is active. These include:
- Apollo
- Postman Butterfly
- Pink Katydid
- White Witch
- Chestnut Tiger
- Crimson Marsh Glider
- Rainbow Stag Beetle
There are also insects with special spawn rules outside of event zones. The clearest example is Sulkowsky’s Morpho, which appears only near the Inflatable Insect Attractor.

7. Insect Hunting Tips
These tips will help you improve your bug catching skills:
- Plan your route around spawn conditions, event access, and hobby upgrades.
- Watch the time of day in the menu, since many insects only appear during specific windows.
- Use stealth mode for skittish insects that fly away easily.
- Prioritize event insects, rainbow-only or rainbow-heavy spawns, and special tool-dependent insects during completion runs.
