Wild animals in Heartopia can be befriended through the Animal Care system by feeding them at their dedicated troughs. Each animal lives in a fixed location, has one trough, and prefers specific foods that grant faster friendship progress.
1. What Is Animal Care in Heartopia?
Animal Care is a relationship-based system, not a Hobby. You do not gain XP or levels. Instead, progress is tracked through friendship hearts earned by feeding animals daily.
Animal Care depends on other systems such as Farming, Fishing, Foraging, and Cooking, which supply the foods animals love most.
How to Unlock the Animal Care System
Animal Care isn’t available immediately — you must unlock it through the Town Guide and story progression:
- Advance the Main Story & Developer Grade (DG) — progress through quests until you see new features unlock in your Town Guide menu.
- Open your Town Guide — the Animal Care section appears once unlocked.
- Speak with Annie in town — she introduces the Animal Care system and gives the first trough quest, usually pointing you to find the first animal trough (commonly the Sika Deer).
- Track the quest — the objective will guide you to locate the first trough. Once you find and feed that trough, the Animal Care system is fully activated, and the Animals app unlocks on your watch for tracking future troughs.
After this, you can return to any trough daily and feed animals their favorite foods to get +2 Bond Hearts.
Tip: If the trough doesn’t show on your map, interact with the Town Guide quest entry — sometimes it needs re‑tracking, or you need to accept the weekly quest instruction.
2. How Feeding & Troughs Work
Each wild animal has one fixed trough placed in the world.
- Wild animals live in fixed regions with one trough each.
- You must physically find each trough once to unlock it for tracking.
- Feeding favorite foods gives higher bond progress than random items.
- You can feed once per in‑game day for best progression.
- Once a trough is discovered, use the Animals app to place a navigation marker for easy daily visits.
3. First Trough Quest — Step‑by‑Step
Heartopia’s first Animal Care quest points you to feed the Sika Deer trough in the Forest.
- Open the Animals app tracker once the quest is accepted. It may show a general direction.
- Fast travel to the Forest Bus Stop for the closest approach to the Forest Lake area.
- Head north along the eastern shoreline of Forest Lake. The terrain here is level and easy to follow.
- On the shoreline’s eastern curve, find the sika deer trough on a small raised area beside the path.
- Open your inventory and place food into the trough (lettuce, branches, or house salad). This completes the first trough quest and enables full Animal Care tracking.
Completing this animal trough opens the Animals app and lets you place map markers for easy daily feeding.
4. All Wild Animal Trough Locations
There are eight wild animal species you can befriend and feed in Heartopia. After you’re set with unlocking the Animal Care System and completing the First Trough quest, your next step is to find all the trough locations.
Panda Trough Location
- Teleport or walk to the Forest region using the Forest Bus Stop.
- Head south toward the Jump Puzzle platforms where the forest elevation rises.
- Find the staircase or stone path leading up to the Jump Puzzle — pandas live just below these steps.
- Once at the base of the stairs, turn right — you’ll see a bamboo grove with a trough tucked among the plants.
Favorite Foods: Bamboo, Apples, Corn
Capybara Trough Location
- Go to Onsen Mountain — use the nearest mountain or forest fast travel point.
- Climb the western trail that leads uphill past the geysers and springs near Crater Lake.
- Continue walking toward the north‑western ridgeline where the terrain curves into a large crescent pool.
- Look for a circular pool with stepping stones nearby. The capybara trough sits just beside this pool, at the edge of the ridge.
Favorite Foods: Tomatoes, Grapes, Raspberries
Bunny Trough Location
- Start at the Western Town Suburbs Bus Stop (central area).
- Walk east along the main dirt path linking the suburbs to town.
- The path curves gently between the bus stop and a small pond — follow it.
- The bunny trough is just off the right side of this path near a patch of grass and bushes.
Favorite Foods: Weeds, Carrots, Strawberries
Fox Trough Location
- Take the Flower Field Bus Stop or walk from Western Town toward the Flower Fields.
- Face south from the bus stop towards the rolling fields and hill where the windmill stands.
- Walk down the slope at the base of the hill — the flower grass gives way to a small depression.
- You’ll see the fox trough next to a woven dark basket‑style trough on flat ground, often marked by small rocks.
Favorite Foods: European Perch, Largemouth Bass, Meat
Sea Otter Trough Location
- Head to the Fishing Village Harbor (use the Fishing Village bus stop for fastest access; it costs 200 gold coins).
- Walk south from the village piers toward the water’s edge.
- Spot the large rocks that jut out into the sea between two small piers.
- Climb onto the largest coastal rock — the sea otter trough sits right on top, facing the waves.
Favorite Foods: Common Shrimp, Oriental Shrimp, Mussels
Ferret Trough Location
- From the Flower Field Bus Stop, walk north toward the Rosy River bridge.
- Cross the bridge and continue along the trail past benches and stumps — this area is lush with grass and trees.
- Keep heading slightly east on the trail — you’ll notice the path narrows before it opens into a small clearing.
- The ferret trough is placed beside a recognizable tree stump or bench cluster on this clearing path. (It blends in, so look carefully.)
Favorite Foods: Eggs, Sea Bass, Goby
Sika Deer Trough Location
- Fast travel to the Forest Bus Stop.
- Walk north toward the Forest Lake shoreline; there’s a path running alongside the water.
- Follow the shore’s eastern edge that curves gently before a small rise.
- The sika deer trough is on this small rise beside the lakeside path, near reeds and trees.
Favorite Foods: Branches, Lettuce, House Salad
Alpaca Trough Location
- Go to the Purple Light Beach area just south of the Flower Field region.
- Locate the bridge that leads from the beach up toward the lighthouse on a gentle hill.
- As you approach the bridge’s base from the beach, look for a wide grassy path sloping uphill.
- The alpaca trough sits slightly to the left of this path, beside a large yellow inflatable duck landmark that’s easy to spot from a distance.
Favorite Foods: Blueberries, Wheat, Pineapple
