Crimson Desert – 10 Best Skills to Get Early

Struggling with early combat? The right skills change everything. From clean combo starters to clutch mobility and crowd control, these early picks shape a smoother path through tougher encounters without wasting Abyss Artifacts.

10 early skills Crimson DesertIn Crimson Desert, you don’t level up in the traditional sense — you progress your character using Abyss Artifacts. These are earned by filling the experience bar from combat, from quests, and by completing special Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges. Each Artifact unlocks or upgrades a node in the skill tree.

Some of the most valuable skills aren’t learned by spending artifacts at all — they appear after you observe specific moves being performed by enemies or NPCs in the world. Watching these in combat unlocks them permanently and lets you spend fewer artifacts later.

1. Skill Tree Structure

Progression in Crimson Desert revolves around three distinct branches, each shaping a different part of combat. Understanding how these paths connect makes it easier to plan early upgrades and avoid wasting Abyss Artifacts on skills that don’t fit your playstyle.

  • Stamina/Combat (blue) – melee & ranged combos, grapples.
  • Spirit (green) – mobility, parry/counter, special strikes.
  • Elemental/Utility (red) – elemental buffs, Axiom Force traversal, utilities.

2. How Skill Observation Works

Learning Force Palm

Skill Observation adds a second layer to progression, letting you unlock abilities by watching them in action instead of spending Abyss Artifacts immediately. It rewards exploration and awareness, especially in the early hours. You can find observations and skills during following:

  • Training grounds and sparring NPCs in settlements
  • Enemy encounters that use advanced or unique attacks
  • Specific locations tied to combat demonstrations or bosses

3. Best Skills to Unlock First

Early skill choices in Crimson Desert shape how fights play out long before gear starts making a difference. A focused set of unlocks builds a reliable combat loop—clean openings, strong control, and enough mobility to stay out of trouble. This list is in order and is designed to help you defeat early game story bosses, including the major boss Kailok the Hornsplitter.

Each upgrade costs 1 Abyss Artifact, with additional upgrades available as you progress further into the tree.

  1. Health/Stamina Skill Upgrades
  2. Forward Slash
  3. Blinding Flash + Blinding Flash Finisher
  4. Vault
  5. Grappling Tree (Lariat / Throw / Giant Swing / Back Hang)
  6. Keen Senses (Parry, Counter, Backstep)
  7. Aerial Force Palm
  8. Evasive Roll
  9. Focus Shot / Charged Shot
  10. Dropkick / Pump Kick

4. Health & Stamina Skill

Stamina Skill

Stamina Skill

Early stat nodes define how stable combat feels before stronger abilities come online. A small investment here makes every other skill easier to use and far more forgiving. Increases Kliff’s maximum health and stamina, extending both survivability and the number of actions you can perform before running out of resources.

How Health & Stamina Upgrade Helps

Higher stamina directly supports constant dodging, sprinting, and chaining abilities without interruption. Extra health gives more room to recover from mistakes, especially in early encounters where healing options and gear are limited. These upgrades remove that pressure and make your core moves—like dodges, grapples, and finishers—more reliable.

5. Forward Slash

Forward Slash Skill

Forward Slash Skill

This is your core heavy attack that connects melee combos, transitions into follow‑ups, and forms the backbone of many offensive sequences. This often unlocks naturally in the skill tree once you have the base combat node unlocked (Stamina branch).

How to use Forward Slash

  1. Use Forward Slash (Right Click) to close the distance on enemies and initiate your combo chain.
  2. It’s fast and use it to follow up with like Turning Slash or Blinding Flash setups.

Nearly every build relies on this move early on; it scales with proficiency upgrades and links into damage and crowd routines.

6. Blinding Flash + Blinding Flash Finisher

Blinding Flash Skill

Blinding Flash Skill

Blinding Flash stuns enemies briefly, and the Finisher lets you follow that stun with a slow‑mo burst combo that hits hard and covers area. It delivers strong crowd control and burst damage early. Many fights in Crimson Desert aggregate enemies, and this skill lets you cut through pressure quickly.

How to use Blinding Flash + Blinding Flash Finisher

  1. In combat, trigger Blinding Flash (Ctrl + Left Click) when a cluster of enemies approaches, or a tougher opponent is about to act.
  2. Follow immediately with the Finisher to unleash a multi‑hit burst.
  3. Timing is crucial — catching multiple enemies in the stun direction increases value.

7. Vault

Vault Skill

Vault Skill

Vault lets you leap over an enemy’s guard or past a shielded foe and bring the fight to their rear. Unlock this node early in the Stamina skill branch. Shields and heavy defenders slow down early progression; Vault cuts through that frustration by repositioning you instantly.

How to use Vault

Press the Vault input (Space) when facing a shielded or high‑armor enemy to bypass their block and position behind them for a stronger follow‑up. Works well against enemies that hold their guard stubbornly.

8. Grappling Tree

Grappling Skills

Grappling Skills

This entire sub‑system lets you control enemies in close quarters — slamming them into the ground, throwing them, or hanging onto larger foes. As you put points in the Grappling node, you unlock sub‑skills like Throw, Restrain, Lariat, Giant Swing, and Back Hang. It gives you control options that outperform basic attacks, especially in packed arenas.

How to use Grapple Skills

  • Throw/Restrain: Press F + Left Click to break enemy formations and throw them far away. For Restrain press again during a stab to hostage the enemy.
  • Lariat: Press F + Right Click and stand in front of enemies to interrupt enemy aggression and slam them into the ground.
  • Giant Swing/Back Hang: Great against bosses or large elites. When you’re using Pump Kick, press F + Right Click to perform a big swing at the enemy.

9. Keen Senses

Keen Senses

Keen Senses

Unlocks parry (timed block), backstep (perfect dodge), and counter hits for precision defense that turns into damage windows. It requires investment in the Spirit (Green) skill tree nodes. These skills reduce random damage taken and create openings — essential for big enemy fights and bosses.

How to use Keen Senses

  • Parry: Time your block (Ctrl) right as the enemy attack connects to stun them.
  • Counter: Follow up a successful parry with a counter hit right before getting hit that interrupts enemy patterns. Upgrade your Keen Senses to Level 3
  • Dodge: Use perfect dodge (Alt) for burst invulnerability and reposition.

10. Aerial Force Palm

Aerial Force Palm Skill

Aerial Force Palm Skill

Uses Spirit to propel Kliff up into the air or deliver a devastating palm strike mid‑combat, offering vertical mobility and repositioning. You can unlock it via the Force Palm branch in the Spirit tree. It is far more consistent than relying on Double Jump alone, and lets you control the vertical layer of fights.

How to use Aerial Force Palm

  1. Start by engaging normally, then look for pressure from enemies or a crowded position.
  2. Click the Right Stick (R3/RS) to trigger Aerial Force Palm and launch upward using Spirit.
  3. While airborne, adjust your direction to move away from danger or toward a better angle above enemies.
  4. If pressure continues, activate it again while you still have Spirit to gain additional height or distance.

11. Evasive Roll

Evasive Roll Skill

Evasive Roll Skill

Mobility is what keeps fights under control early on, and Evasive Roll is one of the first upgrades that makes moves feel reliable instead of reactive. It improves your standard dodge roll by reducing stamina cost and increasing invulnerability frames, making it safer to avoid incoming attacks.

How to Use Evasive Roll

  1. Watch for enemy attack wind-ups instead of reacting late.
  2. Trigger Evasive Roll (Alt) just before the attack connects to pass through damage safely.
  3. Roll toward open space or behind enemies rather than straight back to avoid getting cornered.
  4. After the roll, immediately reposition or follow up with a quick attack while the enemy recovers.

12. Focus Shot/Charged Shot

Charged Shot Skill

Charged Shot Skill

Enhances your ranged capability — Focus Shot lets you mark and precisely target enemies, while Charged Shot increases bow damage. It is great for ranged play and picking on heavy enemies.

How to Use Focus Shot/Charge Shot

  1. Before enemies close in, hold the attack input to prepare a Charged Shot (R2/RT).
  2. Release the shot at a high-priority target to deal early damage or weaken tougher enemies.
  3. As enemies spread or rush in, activate Focus Shot (L2/LT aim) to line up targets more precisely.
  4. Use Focus Shot to eliminate archers or low-health enemies before they become a problem.

13. Dropkick/Pump Kick

Pump Kick Skill

Pump Kick Skill

Kick moves that stagger enemies or knock them off balancePump Kick delivers high impact from above; Dropkick knocks foes away. It adds crowd disruption tools that let you control space instead of trading hits.

How to use DropKick/Pump Kick

  1. Press the kick input while moving (Circle/B) to launch a Dropkick and knock enemies back or off balance.
  2. Use the knockback to push enemies into terrain or separate them from the group.
  3. After impact, chain into a combo or grapple while enemies are staggered.
  4. When fighting near ledges or higher ground, position above enemies.
  5. Trigger the kick input from height to perform Pump Kick, dealing stronger impact and splash damage on landing.
