Supernatural horror and creature features are taking centre stage in this month’s list of the biggest horror movies releasing this April. There’s a lot of star power to go with the monsters and spiders. Nic Cage, Ralph Ineson, Bill Nighy and Giancarlo Esposito are all performing in the upcoming terror fests. The First Omen
The First Omen releases on April 5th to cinemas.
First on our list of the biggest horror movies releasing this April is the upcoming prequel to the iconic Omen Franchise, The First Omen. The film has a strong cast, starring Nell Tiger Free (Game of Thrones, Settlers), Sônia Braga (Luke Cage, Wonder) Ralph Ineson (The Witch, The Northman), and Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean, Love Actually). It’s the 6th instalment in The Omen franchise, with the director Arkasha Stevenson co-writing it with Tim Smith and Keith Thomas.
Margaret Daino moves to Rome to dedicate her life to the Catholic church and working in an orphanage. However she must question her faith as she uncovers a dark and sinister conspiracy to birth the antichrist into the world.
Abigail
Abigail releases on 19th April to cinemas.
Based on a reimagining of the 1936 classic, Dracula’s Daughter, Abigail is the latest film from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (Ready or Not, Scream) and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream VI). Deadline has reported that Scream star Melissa Barrera (Scream, In The Heights) will be teaming up again with the Scream directors in the upcoming movie. Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian), Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb) and Alisha Weir (Matilda the Musical, Wicked Little Letters) have also been cast in the movie.
The modern-day adaptation follows Abigail, the daughter of a powerful underworld figure. Kidnappers seize the child to hold her for ransom. However, the girl is more than she appears, and the criminals soon find themselves trapped inside with a monster.
Infested
Infested releases on 26th April to Shudder.
The first spider movie on our list is the upcoming French horror coming to Shudder, Infested. It’s the first feature length project of director Sébastien Vanicek which is coming to the streaming service after premiering at the Venice film festival. The horror stars Sofia Lesaffre (Ganglands, Alone), Jérôme Niel (Groom, Les Tutos) and Théo Christine (Gran Turismo, How I Became a Super Hero).
Written by Vanicek and Floreny Bernard, Infested follows the lonely Caleb caught up in an inheritance battle with his sister. He takes an interest in a strange spider at a bazaar and takes it home as a pet. When it escapes and begins to relentlessly reproduce it turns the apartment into a horrifying web of death.
Arcadian
Arcadian releases on 12th April to cinemas.
Nicholas Cage stars in the action horror Arcadian. Directed by Ben Brewer, writer of Reptile and a visual effects artists for Everything Everywhere all at Once and written by Michael Nilon. The film premiered at the South by Southwest film festival and at the time of writing sits at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Alongside Nic Cage are Jaeden Martell (IT, IT Chapter Two), Maxwell Jenkins (Reacher, Lost in Space) and Sadie Soverall (Saltburn, The Gathering). The film has some great star power with Nicolas Cage at the helm.
Set in a post apocalyptic earth, Arcadian follows Paul and his twin sons doing there best to survive when monsters stalk the night, killing all they encounter. When Paul is nearly killed his sons must find a way to survive, utilising all the skills they’ve learnt from their father.
Sting
Sting releases on 12th April to cinemas.
The final entry, and second arachnid flick, on our list of the biggest horror movies releasing in April 2024 is upcoming spider movie, Sting. One of the most exciting aspects of the film is Wētā Workshop, famous for their work on Lord of the Rings, Dune and Blade Runner 2049 to name just a few, is on board to create the practical effects of the terrifying colossal spider. Written and directed by Kiah Roache-Turner (Nekrotronic, Wyrmwood), the film stars Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You, Coming 2 America), Alyla Browne (Three Thousand Years of Longing, Nine Perfect Strangers) and Penelope Mitchell (Hellboy, Star Trek: Picard)
12 year-old Charlotte finds an unusual pet when a egg falls from the sky. The small spider is charming at first, but terror ensues when it grows at an alarming rate. The large it gets, the more it’s hunger for blood grows, and the apartment complex becomes a death trap as the spider hunts down the pets and residents.
