Ultimate Universe: One Year In begins with a brutal look at Nick Fury’s efficiency in using H.A.N.D. to maintain control of the world to a frightening degree before introducing the Council. This more personal look at the council shows us a fascinating view into how Ultimate Universe’s villains act and maintain control of the world while the Ultimates continue to fight.
Nick Fury, The Beast, H.A.N.D.
The Ultimate Universe version of the Heli-Carrier is known as the “Beast” or a “Cumulo-Carrier” capable of striking an individual with lightning for saying, “Do you ever wonder if these Ultimate’s people might have a point?”
With these actions becoming more and more regular, when Nick Fury thinks about the absolute power given to H.A.N.D., that they can do pretty much whatever they want, Nick Fury no longer plans to be complicit. Nick Fury, at the end of the demonstration with the strike from the Beast on Keith Kincaid, Fury states his name, that he is the Director of H.A.N.D. And that this is his final confession. Fury planning to turn on the Maker Council.
The Maker’s Council
This issue very effectively shows the heroes and villains chosen by the Maker to maintain his world order. In his absence, and the Ultimate’s activities in North America, the Council has redistributed territories.
- North American Union is controlled by Captain Britain, The Children of Eternal Light (Hulk), and Emmanuel De Costa with the Hellfire Club.
- The Society of South America controlled by Emmanuel De Costa & The Hellfire Club
- The European Coalition controlled by Captain Britain
- The Upper and Lower Kingdoms controlled by Ra & Khonshu
- The Eurasian Republic is controlled by Magik, Colossus, and Omega Red.
- Hi No Kuni (“Land of The Sun”) controlled by Sunfire, Viper and Silver Samurai
- The Children of Eternal Light, led by Hulk as a religious leader, spans across a major portion of Asia, Australia, the Pacific Islands, and the North American Union.
Fury’s Betrayal & The Winter Soldier
Fury throughout the issue delivers a report, looking to distract the Makers Council while the Beast flies away from the civilian population before initiating the Cumulo-Carriers self-destruct sequence, looking to avoid a massive civilian death when the Carrier falls.
The Council leaves Fury confused when the self-destruction sequence doesn’t go off leading to Fury’s grim fate at the hands of the Council. Leading to one final twist, that Marvel comic fans should read for themselves in Ultimate Universe: One Year In.
Thoughts
This chapter does a really good job at showing you how the Maker using Nick Fury has kind of maintained this network of heroes while having a safeguard against them because even the most powerful men and women in the land are the ones needed to be held accountable.
But also looking at how Nick Fury, a secret agent is seeing through the Maker’s order. Fury begins to believe in the Ultimates and what they are fighting for. A moment that is treated as an attack from those in the Maker’s council learning that Fury has implemented spies capable of being anyone in each of the different territories.
Besides show. It’s showing us all these villains who the heroes have been fighting against for this past year. We get the set up to see more of the Eurasian Republic This center holds for mutants as well as see how essentially the Rasputin line with Colossus Magik and Omega Red are in the process of creating Sentinels to fight against mutants and experimenting on Wolverine, turning Logan into the new Winter Soldier.
