Microsoft Might Buy Warner Bros Gaming Division

It is believed that Microsoft could buy Warner Bros. Interactive, which is the gaming division of the company. The buyer would not receive the rights to properties like Batman or Harry Potter but would own Mortal Kombat. If Microsoft ends up making the deal, it means the next Mortal Kombat game will probably be an Xbox Series X exclusive.

Reports claim that Xbox owner, Microsoft, is considering buying AT&T’s gaming division, Warner Bros. Interactive.

The Information reported that Microsoft is in pursuit, along with other gaming giants, Take-Two, EA, and Activision. The sell-off is believed to be happening due to AT&T’s $154 billion debt, which it accrued due to acquisitions like DirecTV. Insiders expect the winner of the sale to receive studios Avalanche Software, Monolith Productions, TT Games, Rocksteady Studios, NetherRealm Studios, and others.

One thing that the purchaser won’t receive is the rights to intellectual property, such as Batman and Harry Potter. Companies will still have to license the rights to use these characters. Similar to how Insomniac made a deal to create Marvel’s Spider-Man. But the purchase will include the franchise Mortal Kombat. Who’s most recent release Mortal Kombat 11 came out in 2019. It is fair to speculate that if Microsoft buys the rights to Mortal Kombat, the next installment will be an Xbox Series X exclusive.
