Vampires: Guide Them to Safety!
They drop down a coffin, so am I really guiding them to safety?
Vampires is a maze puzzle game created by indie developer CBE Software. It’s available on PC/Mac, as well as mobile. If you’ve played any games from the Lemmings series (y’know, made by those guys who make those physic-bending games with cars and guns), then you’ll know how this works. Except you’re guiding vampires.
The creatures of the crypt are looking to suck blood…and make it out safely (stay alert, stay safe). It’s up to you to do so. The vampires move automatically, and you shift the maze to guide them towards the goal (or crypt?). Completing a level will earn you a gold or emerald medal based on your performance, time or move-wise. As you move up the levels (or down, this is a crypt y’know), getting a gold medal gets progressively harder than an emerald medal. New mechanics become introduced as the game progresses. Light in certain spots can and will kill the vampires, so shift the maze to avoid those. Other times, you may have multiple vampires to guide, which can be tricky. They may also be different kinds of vampires; for example, a red vampire turns left at a crossroad in the maze, while a blue vampire will turn right. Knowing these mechanics will expedite the completion of a level, and it gives more depth to the whole experience.
The controls are very basic; left-clicking shifts the maze pieces (if there are any). The arrow keys move the camera to different parts of the map. However, there’s no way to tweak the controls, which is a bit of an issue.
Vampires has an fairly interesting soundtrack. It doesn’t really restrict itself to any specific genre; you could start out with a Halloween-esque theme, then switch to a black metal song. The change can be abrupt, but it’s interesting. You can tweak the volume and SFX in the options menu (the default setting can be quite loud), as well as the quality level of the video. The game does have some very interesting visuals, relying on a top-down 3D perspective. It’s a good way to present the game as being an exploration.
The game has a substantial campaign, and you can even compare your scores to the leaderboards (if you’re playing on Steam, which also has achievements and trading cards). It has about 8 “books”, or sections, and 8 levels in each section. For about $5 USD on Steam, you’re going to get a fairly good maze experience. There are a few faults, mainly with having to tweak everything beforehand, such as the sound and video settings, and being unable to change bindings for controls. However, if you’re a fan of puzzle games, you’ll enjoy Vampires: Guide Them to Safety!
