UK Games Sales Hit Record £5bn Due To Nintendo Switch And VR

Over the past few years, the gaming industry has become a integral part of a nation's economy. Therefore, it is pleasing to see the market is doing so well in the United Kingdom. Last year, gamers splashed out on consoles and virtual reality technology to hit a record £5 billion in sales.

In 2017, UK Gamers spent £5.11 billion on consoles, games, hardware such as headsets and game-related events. The sales were particularly boosted by the Nintendo Switch, which is quickly becoming popular among the gaming community, with Dorian Bloch, director at the market research company Gfk, stating that: "It is clear that the console gaming market is now enjoying a renaissance. Nintendo’s Switch has enjoyed the best [sales] start for a Nintendo home console since the mighty Wii back in 2006.” It is obvious that the Switch is popular amongst fans, as it recently became the fastest selling console in America

In addition, the VR market continues to be popular, with fans spending more than £100 million on headsets for the first time – a 23.5% year-on-year rise. With improved graphics and more hardware becoming available, this area of the successful market, looks set to enjoy more growth. 

It’s been another year of growth for the games industry,” said Jo Twist, chief executive of Ukie. “New hardware such as the Switch have driven retail sales, VR hardware looks healthy and digital games across all platforms continue to grow.” Overall, 2017 was a successful year for the gaming industry in the UK, so hopefully it is set to continue over the course of 2018.
