The Wolf Among Us 2: Release Delay and Speculations

The long awaited sequel to Telltale Games' The Wolf Among Us issued a notice delaying release into 2024. Developers discuss the tough decision after their last update gave a glimpse into what mysteries lie in store for Fabletown's sheriff and the rest of its residents.

The Wolf Among Us 2: Release Delay and Speculations CoverThe Wolf Among Us is a adventure mystery-drama by Telltale Games, adapted from Bill Willingham’s Fables comic series. We explore the city, Fabletown, in 5 episodes as Sheriff “Bigby” Wolf (formally known as ‘The Big Bad Wolf’). After succession of the first game, a second was put on the horizon in 2017.

Delayed Release Announcement

The announcement came via Twitter by Telltale Games, stating development will be pushed from 2023 into 2024. Jamie Ottilie (CEO of LCG Entertainment) recounted to IGN the struggles of building a studio during the 2020 pandemic. As well as acknowledging their switch from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal 5 proving timely. Because crunching posed a prolonged problem for original Telltale Games before closure, Ottilie ensures their rebranding won’t repeat this.

“If we put this game out and it’s not ready, we’re going to get torn to shreds. The expectations are pretty high, and we want time to meet those– Let the world say what they will, but at least we know that in these times, in these conditions, this is the best game we could make.”

Latest Updates

The next adaptation will be available to play on PC and consoles (PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One). While a schedule has yet to be disclosed, five installments were verified for the series. The team plans to issue the game episodically after the project is completely finished, in contrary to their predecessors.

Following one of Telltale’s most acclaimed titles from 2013; LCG Entertainment partnering with AdHoc Studio reaffirmed the game’s sequel during the 2019 Game Awards with an announcement trailer. This was a delight to fans that were concerned of the project’s cancellation upon Telltale’s closure in 2018. In February 2022, a streaming event (hosted by Geoff Keighley) premiered an official trailer, interviews and behind-the-scenes content.

Story Development and Speculations

During the streaming event, Nick Herman (Co-Founder of AdHoc Studio) and Jamie Ottilie gave additional intel regarding the plots direction. Above all was assurance there would still be point & click choice selective gameplay as done before. Though indication say this continuation wouldn’t be a direct follow-up plot of the first story plot.

“We strive to design our narratives so they can stand on their own. We think the opening of the first episode sets things up in such a way that the player understands how the characters got to where they are now.”

-Ottilie

This is refreshing for newcomers that haven’t played game one. Still, first season veterans are vastly curious as to how the lore would unfold. Production summarizes the sequel taking place 6 months after the events of the former. Snow White has now settled in as appointed Deputy Mayor of Fabletown. Whereas Sheriff Bigby Wolf enrolls into group anger management counseling. It seems an existential crisis is presented to Bigby as his natural tendencies question his place among other fables and mundys.

Key characters and sneak peeks from the official trailer.

Upon reviewing the official trailer there are exciting reveals that can be notated. Characters resembling Oz step in as apparent antagonists; the ‘Cowardly Lion’ missing from the bunch. Development was able to confirm that some of them will have reoccurring roles throughout episodes. There is also cameo from official teasers of a new character: “Faye Leung”, who Herman identified as a detective. Last to reference is the form Bigby takes at the trailer’s closing which unveils a fourth transformation. What deciphers this from a mere visual alternative is the trailer’s dialogue focusing on how Bigby’s emotions reflects his power.

There are other points that fans have toppled over; from the whereabouts of Nerissa to the secrets of the witcher’s well. The Wolf Among Us 2 foresees its rollout in 2024 with promise of thorough programming. It would be worth playing the original in the meantime.
