We are mere months away from the start of the next console war, and anticipation is high. But, could the PS5 be set to outsell the Xbox Series X? Yes, if market analysts are to be believed.
Industry analysts have waded in on how they think gaming in 2020 will play out. Regarding which console will triumph over the others, gameindustry.biz spoke to Piers Harding -Rolls of IHS Markit Technology, who sees PlayStation as having the edge. Piers has a proven track record of making correct industry predictions. When asked in early 2019, he made eleven predictions, ten of which, came to pass. Speaking on the topic, Harding-Rolls had this to say.
“I expect PS5 to outsell Xbox Series X in 2020, but for both platforms to sell more consoles at launch than both the PS4 and Xbox One did back in 2013”. “One new factor for this upcoming generation is the impact of backwards compatibility on brand loyalty and audience transition. I think we’ll see less brand switching as a result.”

A recent leak of possible tech specs for both nex-gen consoles suggests that the PS5 could be significantly cheaper than Microsoft’s offering. PlayStation’s console may be somewhat less technologically impressive, but this will allow for a more reasonable price, allegedly around £399.
Analyst Dr Sherkan Toto predicts a 4K upgrade to the Nintendo Switch, saying “I also think the device will launch after the Summer holidays to counter the roll-out of the PS5 and next-gen Xbox later in the year – along with first-party, system selling games”. The Nintendo Switch has rebounded the platform after the disastrous Wii U, and a 4K Nintendo console could eat into both it’s competitors profits come Holiday 2020.
