Temtem began as a KickStarter campaign back in June 2018, created by the Spanish gaming company, CremaGames. Since then it has amassed an astonishing $573,939 in support from over 11,000 backers. The beginning of January allowed for select players to take part in the stress test, and at the end of the month, Temtem will go into Early Access, but what can we expect from this new MMO?
What is Temtem?
Described as ‘a massively multiplayer creature collection adventure inspired by Pokémon’, Temtem introduces us to the world of Airborne Archipelago. Exploring the six islands that make up this mystic land, we, the Temtem tamer, can train our Temtem companions and battle against other players. Standing in our way is the shady Clan Belsoto and their captains: Lady Lottie, a self-absorbed aristocrat; General X, a stern and strict officer; and Dr. Hamijo, a morally questionable scientist.
As well as delving into the story campaign and teaming up with friends for co-op adventures, this MMO also offers customisation options. Your character can look however you wish, and battling other tamers will unlock new cosmetics for you to wear. The game also allows for each player to buy their own house in the Atoll Row neighbourhoods. This house can be decorated however you wish. Not only that, but you can invite your friends over once it’s done. Not sure which look to go for? Check out other players’ houses for inspiration.
What are Temtems?
Just like Pokémon, Temtems have their own strengths and weaknesses that can be exploited during a battle. Each one has their own type and combat style, which will have advantages and disadvantages depending on the type of opposing Temtem. The developers dedicated themselves to ensuring that random factors don’t play a part in the battles. Skill and strategy are key here.
Tamers will also have the opportunity to breed Temtems. This allows for a Temtem to inherit statistics from their parents and learn new move sets. While this opens up many interesting benefits, players must be aware of over-breeding.
Temtem vs Pokémon?
It is unlikely that Temtem will rival Pokémon in any way, and at the moment appears to compliment it rather than show a wish to compete. Nevertheless, while the game draws on many qualities from the Pokémon world that fans know and love, the MMO aspect of this game offers it an appealing edge.
Temtem will be available on PC (Steam and Humble) on the 21st January, and at a later date on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
