Tell Me Why is free to download and play right now on Xbox consoles and PC. The title is available for free all of June to coincide with Pride Month. You can play the game anytime after, as long as it is added to your library during June 2021. As an Xbox console exclusive, the game isn’t accessible on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch.
The developers explained in a blog post that they are making it available as a free download to support the LGBTQIA+ community by providing links to trans and queer organisations you can donate to.
Our intention in making Tell Me Why free for June 2021 is both to allow even more people to access the game and to encourage our players to spend their money in places that will directly affect trans and queer communities.
The Dontnod developed mystery-adventure tells its story over three episodes, all of which are included as a bundle for free. The episodes follow Alaskan twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan as they try to reconnect after spending years apart. There is also a family mystery to be solved using the twins’ unique telepathic bond. This recalls key memories and helps the twins communicate secretly.
The title gained a lot of attention when it was released because it was the first AAA video game to feature a transgender protagonist. The developers consulted with organisations like GLAAD to help create a respectful and authentic character. They also hired trans man August Aiden Black to voice Tyler Ronan. This led to high praise, and a lot of prestigious award wins and nominations.
