The Settled Systems
Emil Pagliarulo: We’re very excited to offer you this exclusive look at Starfield and the exciting universe we’ve created, which is an area of our solar system we call the Settled Systems. Our game is set in the year 2330, in a relatively small pocket of the Milky Way, in an area that extends outward from our solar system for approximately 50 light years.
I’m a bit confused here. Emil Pagliarulo says that the Settled Systems are in “our solar system,” which taken literally would mean that they orbit around our star, the sun. However, the chart shown 27 seconds into the video appears to depict the Settled Systems orbiting around another star. Perhaps he meant to say “our galaxy” instead of “our solar system.” Or maybe he meant “our solar system” as in Bethesda’s creation.
Colony War
Emil Pagliarulo: Around 20 years before the start of the game, the two largest factions in the Settled Systems, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective, engaged in the bloody Colony War. Today, the major factions enjoy an uneasy peace, but the Settled Systems is still pretty dangerous.
Now Emil Pagliarulo provides a bit of backstory. He told us about the two major factions in the Location Insights videos and now he reveals that they have waged war in the past. This “Colony War” reminds me of the “Great War” in the Elder Scrolls series, which has major implications in Skyrim. They both take place a few decades prior to when the player begins their journey and in each case the involved factions are still bitter. Starfield has been referred to as “Skyrim in space” before, so maybe that’s because the atmosphere is very similar to Skyrim’s.
More Factions
Emil Pagliarulo: There are plenty of human threats out there. Like Ecliptic mercenaries, the pirates of the Crimson Fleet, violent Spacers, or even the fanatical religious zealots of House Va’ruun.
Here is some interesting new lingo. I wonder if the Ecliptic mercenaries are a unified faction or if Ecliptic has some symbolic significance. The Crimson Fleet seems like a powerful hostile faction like the Forsworn, or the Slavers of Paradise Falls. Spacers may be Starfield’s version of bandits and raiders. House Va’ruun intrigues me. My immediate thought when I heard that name was, that sounds like dragon language. So I tried to translate it thinking that dragon language may hold a clue about House Va’ruun. I examined these words, but I found no clues.
Ru: Run
Vah: Spring

Constellation
Emil Pagliarulo: The organization known as Constellation is committed to uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy. And as one of its newest members, you’ll explore the deepest reaches of the Settled Systems and you’ll find yourself at home… in the Starfield.
This tells fans more about what Constellation does. It’s been obvious that the player is part of this organization for a while now. Constellation seems to be some kind of expedition company. Perhaps they make maps, collect data, and discover creatures then profit from the information somehow.
Fans will find out what exactly Constellation does when Starfield comes out on November 11th, 2022.
