Sony and Tencent now have a combined 30% share holding of FromSoftware. This news comes off of the back of Sony’s recent acquirement of Savage Game Studios as the company continues to stake its claim in the games industry.

The current shareholding percentages are as follows: Sony holds a 14.09% stake and Tencent has 16.25% stake. This results in just over a 30% share in FromSoftware. However, the major shareholder remains Kadokawa with 69.66%.

This move is interesting because it shows the continued financial viability of the developer. This is evidenced through the major success of their most recent IP Elden Ring. The game has gone on to become one of the bestselling games in US history, propelling FromSoftware into legendary developer status.

Therefore, it is a safe investment for Sony and Tencent to invest in the future of the developer.

Kadokawa’s Statement on the Sony and Tencent Investment

Kadokawa has provided a statement on the news of Sony and Tencent investing in FromSoftware, sharing the following:

“FromSoftware decided to conduct the Third-Party Allotment to Sixjoy within the Tencent Group, which has strength in its capabilities to develop and deploy mobile games and other network technologies in the global market including China, and SIE within the Sony Group, which has strength in its capabilities to deploy IP in games, videos and various other media in the global market, concurrently and separately.”

This provides strong evidence of FromSoftware’s future expansion into multiple markets with the assistance of Tencent. The statement shows a keen interest in China, which stands as an ever growing and ever profitable node to connect your brand to. There is also an awareness of the capabilities of Sony, not only to “deploy IP”, but also their reach other consumer media, hinting at an interest in expanding the brand of FromSoftware beyond video games alone.

All we can say for certain at this time is that major corporations are continuing to take a strong interest in this titan of a developer and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
