Sonic Team has decided to celebrate the new year with some special new Sonic Frontiers art. The image was posted on the official Japanese Sonic account with a special “Happy New Year” message. According to Google, it translates to the following:
“Happy New Year
This year, with more momentum than last year, we would like to take on many challenges as a team so that we can bring the charm of Sonic to even more people.
Thank you for your continued support of Sonic this year.”
Eagled-eyed fans will likely pick up on the fact that this new piece of Sonic Frontiers art looks very similar to a scene in the announcement trailer.
Sonic Frontiers was actually supposed to come out last year. In fact, Sega decided to delay it until Q4 2022 because they wanted to give it more time to “brush up on the quality”. This statement comes from a SEGASammy Investor Q&A on December 14th, 2021:
“Originally it was planned to be released on this year, the 30th anniversary of Sonic, but we have postponed the release for a year in order to further brush up the quality. Not only for this title, but during the development phase, we have been steadily conducting analysis to improve the quality of the title before release, such as introducing game testing based on external evaluations, and I have a feeling that it will become a good game and have high expectations for it.”
Regardless, the new Sonic Frontiers art will generate a touch of hype by adding to the news cycle. However, fans still have a long wait, as Sega currently plans to launch the game in the holiday 2022 time frame. In the meantime, the blue blur has made some other appearances that may hold fans over.
