PlatinumGames has announced Sol Cresta with a 2021 release window on Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam as a download-only title. This announcement was made via the company’s Twitter account. The vertical scrolling shooter is the third game in the Cresta series, which last saw a release in 1985 with Terra Cresta. This new entry in the franchise is being made in collaboration with Hamster Corporation, which specialise in porting retro arcade games to modern platforms. This news is out of the ordinary for developer PlatinumGames, which is more known for its expertise in the 3D hack-and-slash genre, as seen in Bayonetta and NieR: Automata.

This isn’t the first time Sol Cresta has appeared, however. Last year PlatinumGames made a series of new announcements dubbed the “Platinum 4”. Among these reveals was the launch of the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for The Wonderful 101 Remastered and a tease for a mysterious new game only referred to as Project G.G. The last of these was an April Fools’ Day joke. A trailer for Sol Cresta in the form of an arcade cabinet that at the time was not official. A year later, and it seems that even though the cabinet may not be real, the game itself is.
