The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD has just surpassed the original game’s lifetime sales on Wii. Nintendo’s newest earnings report says the improved Nintendo Switch version had sold about 3.6 million units as of September 30th. The original Wii version of the game sold about 3.67 million. It reached this milestone in the span of just a few short months. Nintendo’s choice to bring this adventure to the Switch appears to have been a good move.
The original game hit during the tail end of the Wii era, in November of 2011. The Wii U showed up a year or so after this, leading into a time when things did not go the best for Nintendo. While not really a bad console, the Wii U suffered from poor marketing. Regardless, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD has revived that Wii adventure with a number of new improvements for a new generation.
Skyward Sword HD is certainly not the first older game to do well on the Switch. Sales data for other games shows that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has moved 38.74 million copies so far. Meanwhile, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 34.85 million units. Third place belongs to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 25.71 million copies sold so far. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild follows it in fourth place, having moved 24.13 million units in sales. Finally, the top five are rounded out by Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. The pair have sold a combined 22.64 million copies.
