On November 4th, Capcom suffered an unauthorized data breach and been a victim of a ransomware attack. Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shinbun reported that the attack was conducted by a group known as “Ragnar Locker”. The report said that Capcom had not cooperated with the group’s request, and as a result, they have leaked internal documents to the internet. One of the leaked documents suggests that the Japanese exclusive Dai Gyakuten Saiban, Ace Attorney spin-off for 3DS, will be localized into English and coming to PS4 and Switch. It was supposed to be announced in April or May 2022 with a July release window.
According to the leaked document, Dai Gyakuten Saiban will be re-released for PS4 and Switch as a part of a new Ace Attorney Collection with English text and recording. The bundle comprises the original Ace Attorney Trilogy and Dai Gyakuten 1 and 2. It will include eight extra DLC episodes, two rare Special Court videos, 13 videos from the Sinful Seven Days of Phoenix Wright series, and three costumes for Dai Gyakuten Saiban. The Sherlock Holmes character’s name will also be changed to ‘Herlock Sholmes’ as a reference to the Sherlock Holmes vs Arsene Lupin book and to avoid copyright and trademark issues.
Dai Gyakuten Saiban was initially released on the Nintendo 3DS on July 9, 2015, in Japan. Later it got ported to iOS and Android devices on August 31, 2017. Unlike the main Ace Attorney series that are set in modern times, Dai Gyakuten Saiban takes place in Japan’s Meiji period (1868-1912). You play as Phoenix Wright’s ancestor, Ryuichi Naruhodo, accompanied by a female assistant named Susato Mikotoba. The two later travel to the United Kingdom and meet the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes. Although both the first game and its sequel are Japan-only releases, an unofficial English fan-translation patch for the first game was released in March 2019 and translated the title as The Great Ace Attorney. The fan-patch group is currently working on the sequel.
The leaked document also hinted at several other projects. Such as PC port for Monster Hunter Rise and Stories 2, Resident Evil battle royale spin-off codenamed Project Highway or Village Online, a new multiplayer streamer-focused shooter game called SHIELD planned to launch in 2022, new Switch-exclusive IP named GUILLOTINE, and Resident Evil 4 VR for Oculus VR. Currently, the company is still consulting with the authorities and taking safety measures to restore its systems. Hopefully, this whole issue can be solved quickly and with no harm to Capcom employees.
