It’s been a long time waiting, but it’s finally here: a new Monkey Island game! Titled Return to Monkey Island, this game is slated to be released at some point in 2022. Unfortunately, there’s no gameplay to see at this point. Not much is known about the story either, except it’s confirmed that it will be a follow-up of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, a game that originally came out in 1996 and was re-released in 2010 as a special edition. At this stage, it’s unknown what platforms the new game will release on.

Return to Monkey Island has been created by original series creator Ron Gilbert with his development studio Terrible Toybox. The studio has worked with Devolver Digital and LucasFilm Games to make the new Monkey Island game. Ron Gilbert has written and designed the game, along with Dave Grossman, one of the original Monkey Island writers. The music has been done by Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian, all who did the music for the other Monkey Island games. The original voice actor for the main character Guybrush Threepwood, Dominic Armato, has also come back for Return to Monkey Island.

It’s been over 10 years since a game in the Monkey Island series was released. The last game to come out was Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge: Special Edition, which was way back in 2010! The very first game in the series, The Secret of Monkey Island, came out in 1990.
