PolarByte Games and Skymap Games have just launched Rolled Out! Early Access on Steam. Their indie ball rolling game pays homage to several challenging old-school Sega games in the genre (Super Monkey Ball and Super Monkey Ball 2 or the compilation Super Monkey Ball Deluxe). These games hail from the Gamecube era, with levels from easy up to super hard.
Rolled Out! brings 150+ levels with modern HD graphics to the table, running on the Unreal Engine. Tilt, bounce, and of course roll your way around the levels to reach the goal. Along the way, you can collect coins of differing denominations to earn extra lives.
The current Rolled Out! early access release is still very much a work in progress. PolarByte Games has presently made two major game modes available (Arcade and Practice). The main game mode with a world map is still in development. Meanwhile, the Rolled Out! community is already playing with creation of custom levels for the game as well.
The Road Map
The developer’s road map for Rolled Out! highlights a ton of stuff still in the pipeline as development continues. Upcoming major features include the main game mode, new worlds, new playable characrters, new game mechanics, replays, multiplayer, ball customizations, even better custom level support and more. PolarByte Games also plans to add tutorials, an assist mode, and expanded settings.
So is Rolled Out! Worth It?
If you like these sort of games, and particularly the Super Monkey Ball games it pays homage to, then most likely yes. PolarByte Games have very faithfully recreated the gameplay feel of those games as you roll up hills, around corners, and past obstacles. Of course, you may want to wait for a later release if you don’t like incomplete games. However, for those who want to help shape its development, now is a great time to get involved.
Players can already create their own custom stages using the same custom Blender plugin the developers use to make their levels. For those who don’t know, Blender is a free and very powerful 3D-modelling package. So there will be no shortage of content in Rolled Out! You can find out more about the game at the offical website, and its Discord server.
