Today is a special day! PlayStation is celebrating its 25th anniversary for its UK launch today. PlayStation UK’s official Twitter posted commemorating the date alongside a nostalgic video of the first consoles launch screen. Join us as we take a look back at an industry front-runner.

Looking back on a legend

The PlayStation 1 was officially launched in Japan on December 3rd, 1994, a date commemorated by Sony on its blog. Run and guns, arcade racers, and platformers entered the home and created a new community of gamers, opening up the market for creatives all over the world to transform the art form. After over 6 years of production, PlayStation 1 had morphed in-home gaming from entertaining, simplistic arcade-style games to fully-fleshed out stories with open worlds and roleplaying choices.

Resident Evil, Spyro the Dragon, Silent Hill, and Crash Bandicoot are among the endless list of classics released on the console which have shaped gaming experiences since. Since then, every month there’s a new game to get excited for. Now, there’s news about industry transformations which are taking gaming to a whole new level every single day (seriously, check out our News Roundup).

Daniel Ahmed, industry insider and analyst for Niko Partners, shared some old press releases on Twitter for PlayStation’s 25th anniversary, advertising the console as £299 with 8 launch titles priced at £40 to £45 each.

By the launch of the PlayStation 2, every kid wanted a console in their bedroom. We’d sit and hand around the controllers, all huddled around a tiny TV with friends. Losing friends over Mortal Kombat, slow-mo diving and shooting in Max Payne, and speedrunning zombie-infested streets had all become the best parts of our days.

The legacy lives on with the PlayStation 5, launching on November 12th 2020. PlayStation revealed that a remaster of Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition and a remake of Demon’s Souls will be available to play upon launch. New exclusives include Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: a Big Adventure, and Just Dance 2021.
