In a move that’s bound to delight & excite PS4 owners around the globe, Sony has acquired Insomniac Games, the studio behind 2018’s outstanding exclusive, Marvel’s Spider-Man. This news comes just hours after Xbox held their presentation at Gamescom, in Cologne, Germany.
PlayStation & Insomniac have a long history of collaboration, having developed two of the platform’s icons, Spyro & Ratchet and Clank. Despite this close relationship, the developer has always retained a level of independence from the big platforms. Before developing Marvel’s Spider-Man, the team created Sunset Overdrive, an exclusive for the Xbox One.
This is a smart move on the part of Sony, considering how well Marvel’s Spider-Man sold. The game was recently revealed to be the most successful superhero game of all time & remains one of the best selling games of 2019, so it makes perfect sense to lock in this lucrative acquisition. If you haven’t played Marvel’s Spider-Man, you’re missing out on one of the best experiences out there. In our review we called the game the best Spiderman experience yet. In a press release, Shawn Laydon, chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment praised the developer, saying:
Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled. . . We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.
In an additional statement Ted Price, CEO & founder of Insomniac Games talked of the “greater opportunities” the acquisition would create, saying:
Joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people’s lives. We’ve enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel’s Spider-Man was a testament to this. We’re excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our longtime WWS partners. Most of all, we look forward to delivering fresh, new experiences for our fans.
PlayStation has prided themselves on the quality of their exclusive games, building the reputation of the PS4 on the backs of games like God Of War & Marvel’s Spider-Man. With this news, we can expect exciting things to come from the studio in the (hopefully) near future.
If you’ve yet to experience the thrilling feeling of swinging through New York, you can buy Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4.
