In the United States, the PlayStation 5 shipped the most units in any console launch month history in a big win for Sony. As reported by The NPD’s Matt Piscatella, the previous record was also belonging to Sony with the PlayStation 4 that released in November 2013.
Despite the PlayStation 5 being the most successful console ever in its opening month, it was still beaten in the month of November in raw sales by the Nintendo Switch. The Switch has extraordinary had this title for 24 consecutive months.
As for the competition, the Xbox Series X|S did not set any records for its launch month. Microsoft did sell out all shipments of their new consoles though so have done somewhat successful, but unable to triumph Sony.
Video games have obviously sold well in this period as consumers need something to play on their shiny new boxes. For PlayStation platforms, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the best selling – the 13th consecutive year that a Call of Duty game has topped the table in its launch month. PlayStation exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales occupies the second spot.
Fellow exclusives Demon Souls and Sackboy: A Big Adventure sit at the fifth and tenth best selling games of the month respectively.
Finishing with accessories, the PlayStation’s 5 controller; the DualSense achieved the highest launch month units and dollar sales in U.S. history.
