Nintendo and Square Enix have released a demo of the upcoming Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition on the Switch eShop. However, this won’t be a measly twenty-minute affair like your typical demo. Instead, Nintendo has stated that it should last a whopping ten hours – and it’s completely for free.
The news was announced during a Dragon Quest presentation at Gamescom 2019. The presentation featured a hefty amount of gameplay that players can expect to see in the demo for themselves, along with commentary from series creator Yuji Horii and producer Hokuto Okamoto. The footage can be found embedded below.
There will be a few benefits for players of the demo. First and foremost, any progress made in the demo can be carried over into the full retail release. Secondly, players with demo save data on their Switch will automatically unlock a free “Tockles” spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Dragon Quest XI S is the long-awaited Switch version of the acclaimed JRPG. It will be no mere port, as there will be a massive amount of new content added. This includes original stories for every party member, fully orchestrated music, Japanese and English voice acting, and the ability to visit the worlds of previous Dragon Quest games. Perhaps the most significant addition is the option to switch between modern 3D visuals and retro 16-bit graphics, which was previously only available in the Japan-exclusive 3DS version of the game.
It will launch on Switch on September 27, while the demo is available to download now. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out our beginner’s guide to help prepare for the game’s release.
