Perhaps one of the lesser known upcoming titles in the world of video games, Granblue Fantasy: Relink has been under the wings of series creators, Cygames, as well as co-developers, PlatinumGames. It seems, however, things weren't exactly working out with the two development studios teaming up, as Cygames has officially announced the move to continue development entirely with their internal studio.
The Granblue Fantasy series has made waves on the mobile platform with its classic take on RPG mechanics accompanied by Final Fantasy's famed composer, Nobuo Uematsu and art director, Hideo Minaba. Stepping away from the mobile market, two new Granblue titles are currently in development — one being a fighting game from Dragon Ball FighterZ developers, Arc System Works; and the other is the PS4 exclusive RPG now formerly developed by Nier: Automata developers, PlatinumGames.
The press release from Cygames stated that "Going forward, Cygames will handle 100% of development internally", revealing no reasoning behind the move. However, PlatinumGames revealed that their contract was merely expired, and no extension was granted in order for them to finish development of the game.
While PlatinumGames was surely a big name in helping bring over the franchise to a larger platform, the game looks as though it will still carry out the same intentions as before, with a closing statement from Cygames reading:
"Cygames would like to assure everyone looking forward to the title that we remain committed to delivering a game that meets the expectation of our fan-base and gamers everywhere." – Cygames
There's currently no release window for either upcoming Granblue Fantasy game.
