Discord has become one of the largest communication services on the market today. The recent pandemic has caused its popularity to increase even more. Over 140 million people use the platform each month. With such a large number of active users, it’s not surprising to see other companies start to take interest. According to Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation has announced a partnership with Discord. The company acquired a minority interest in the communication service.

Discord provides online communication through channels created by users to create private and public communities. People can use video, voice, and text chat to communicate using the platform. The service is extremely popular among the gaming community, but it has grown to become a tool used for daily communication in a number of hobbies and professions as well.
PlayStation is not the first company to express interest in Discord. Before its partnership with the communication service, Microsoft had been in talks about a possible buyout of the company. The possible deal between these two companies was reportedly over $10 billion. However, the deal with Microsoft was rejected by the owners of the communication service.
According to Jim Ryan, the company promises to integrate the service with the PlayStation experience at the start of 2022. While the extent of Discord support on console and mobile devices for Sony remains unclear, this could give them a boost against Xbox. Gamers on Xbox currently can’t use the Discord app for voice chat on the console.
The blog post noted the goal hoped to be achieved from the two companies working together.
Jim Ryan: Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.
What will this partnership between the two companies look like in the future? The announcement didn’t mention whether PlayStation will have official Discord integration. Little is known for sure, but based on the remarks from Jim Ryan, we should learn more in the coming months.
