An upcoming cyberpunk battle royale game called Off The Grid, has just dropped its first teaser trailer. Off The Grid is being developed by Gunzilla Games along with acclaimed film director; Neill Blomkamp. The trailer also brought with it confirmation of Blomkamp’s involvement, following rumours of his involvement with the project.
The official teaser trailer for Off The Grid, – where a futuristic-looking soldier emerges from the woods ready for battle, – can be seen below.
Neill Blomkamp is best known for having directed sci-fi blockbusters such as District 9, Elysium and Chappie. This marks his first foray into video game development. He is the one responsible for creating Off The Grid’s narrative, characters and world along with the team at Gunzilla.
Off The Grid’s website states that the game’s main feature will be a battle-royale mode which will host 150 players. These players will for supremacy across a futuristic environment. The title will also feature both PvP and PvE story-based missions which will form the game’s campaign.
Anyone playing Off The Grid will be able to, “control how the story unfolds, with each decision made directly impacting everyone’s gameplay.” Players will also have the ability to craft and customise their own gear and then trade that gear with other players within the game world.
Choose a faction, fight for dominance in an all-out corporate war, and shape the bigger story. Learn more about #OffTheGrid and its concept of #BattleRoyale 2.0 in Neill's @gamespot interview. Thanks, Jordan Ramée (@JMRee). Read on👇 https://t.co/gk3j2i5bbk

Neill Blomkamp also did an interview with GameSpot, where he spoke more about the gameplay systems in Off The Grid and the goals that he and the developers are striving for.
We’re trying to decide the best way of doing [factions]. But I think the idea of a larger story that is told from different points of view is definitely a key pillar. So on this island, you have corporate sabotage and espionage and things that are happening that result in the hiring of assassins – those are basically the players that you embody – and through doing that, you can see how this world of refugees and contractors and mercenaries-for-hire and corporate elites all create this really interesting bubbling powder keg of conflict and layers and layers and layers of characters and stories that you can go into in different ways in the future.
Off The Grid is expected to release sometime in 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
