Suddenly Nintendo’s bizarre removal of Super Mario Bros. 35 seems a bit less crazy. They have just announced that PAC-MAN 99 for Switch Online is launching today (yesterday in the UK). Coming 40 years after the release of the original game, it turns PAC-MAN into a 99 player battle royale to see who will be the last pellet muncher standing.
Snarfing down a Power Pellet gives you the temporary ability to eat ghosts. Chowing down on those pesky guys in turn sends Jammer Pac-Man to your opponents. Getting hit by one of these guys reduces your movement speed. The more ghosts you gobble up, the more of these Jammers you send out to make life difficult for your foes. PAC-MAN 99 for Switch Online has eight pre-set strategies, including speed up and send extra Jammers among others.
You’ll also see smaller, gray ghosts in PAC-MAN 99 for Switch Online. These are “sleeping ghosts”, and eating them causes them to form a ghost train. Swallow a Power Pellet and feast on the ghost train to quickly send a barrage of Jammers out to your foes!
You can use the buttons on the left side of the screen to access four power ups (Standard, Stronger, Speed, and Train). The buttons on the right side let you change the targeting option you’re using (Counter, Hunter, Random, and Knockout). You can see this in the trailer above.
Should you survive your battle royale ordeal to be the last Pac-Man standing, the best of the 99, you will be dubbed the “Pac-One”.
The game page linked above also shows a number of DLCs. The Mode Unlock DLC ($14.99) unlocks additional modes (CPU Battle, Password Match, Score Attack, Blind Time Attack, 8 PAC-MAN arrangements, and some custom themes). There are 20 custom themes, each of which makes the game board look like another classic NAMCO title ($1.99 each). If you want all the downloadable content, there is a Deluxe Pack DLC for $29.99.
