It’s that time of year again where rumours of a new Nintendo Switch model are starting to appear. This time the news is coming from the Taipei based website Economic Daily News, which has claimed that a new Nintendo Switch model is to launch next year with the machine entering production later this year. The article by Economic Daily News states that several component manufacturers are currently producing parts for a new Nintendo machine, parts that will give the new machine improved picture quality and higher interactivity.
These are not the first rumours about a new model of Nintendo Switch. A report by The Wall Street Journal in 2019 suggested that there would be two new models of Switch to launch in the not too distant future. A few months later Nintendo went on to announce its Nintendo Switch Lite, a smaller, cheaper handheld only model. Could this new model be the second model that The Wall Street Journal was hinting at?
Launching in 2017, the Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console which allows players to use the system both as a handheld and a home console. The Switch has gone on to be one of Nintendo’s biggest selling consoles in the company’s history, recently outselling Nintendo’s debut games console the Nintendo Entertainment System.
2020 has been a quiet year for Nintendo with only two major first party releases thus far; Animal Crossing New Horizons, and Paper Mario: The Origami King, with a remake of Pikmin 3 to follow in October. Additionally it has been almost a full year since the last Nintendo Direct; the last was broadcast on 18 August 2019. However, there are rumours that there could be a new Nintendo Direct this week. If the rumours are true then it is possible that COVID-19 might well have put a dampener on Nintendo’s plans to launch this new model this year.
But what do you think, dear reader? Do you believe that there is a new Nintendo Switch Model set to launch next year? Do you think its a load of hot air? Let us know in the comments below!
