New Metroid Dread story details have emerged from the official teaser website. The game was first revealed in the Nintendo E3 2021 Direct. Nintendo’s new website for the game has uploaded “Report Vol. 01”. It features several “transmissions” from the development team and bits of information on things like the E.M.M.I.
The intro section of this first report says it will be a series introducing the latest details on the Metroid universe. In this case, the biggest one is some new details about the Metroid Dread story arch. It also plans to include behind-the-scenes looks from the development team. Its first volume gives a few more details on the premise of Samus’s latest adventure.
First up is some background intel on the mission from Samus Aran herself. It starts by summarizing her battle against the SA-X in Metroid Fusion. This leads into the premise for the Metroid Dread story:
“One day, the Galactic Federation received video footage from an unknown source indicating that the X still lived. The Federation dispatched a special unit consisting of seven E.M.M.I. robots to the remote planet ZDR, believed to be the source of the transmission.
Soon after arriving on ZDR, the whole unit mysteriously vanished.
Does the X truly still exist? And just what is happening on ZDR? It’s up to me, the only one immune to the X parasite, to go find out…”
Metroid Dread Development History
In addition to the new Metroid Dread story details, we also got some information on what happened to the game in development. You may recall that it was seemingly referenced by a scannable console data log in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. However, years passed after that Easter egg, but the new game never materialized from Nintendo.
Well, just after the Nintendo E3 2021 Direct, the beginning of Nintendo Treehouse Live featured a video of the Metroid series Producer/Director Yoshio Sakamoto. He revealed where the game went for so long. Development was ceased twice because they didn’t think the technology at those times was able to bring the game to life as intended. The third time’s the charm, as they say.
Extra Goodies
Samus’s latest adventure is getting a special edition. It is not available yet, but rather “coming soon”. The special edition comes with a steel game case and these additional extras:
- Five high-quality cards adorned with art for each game (Metroid 1-5)
- A 190-page art book spanning those same five games
The new teaser website also details the Samus and E.M.M.I. amiibo. These figures are both pivotal characters in the Metroid Dread story. So what does the upcoming amiibo do in the game?
According to the new teaser website, they do different but similar things. The Samus one gives you a bonus energy tank, increasing your max health. After that, you can scan it once per day to heal yourself. It doesn’t say how much health it restores, though. The E.M.M.I. amiibo gives you a bonus missile tank, allowing you to hold 10 more missiles. After that, you can tap it once daily to replenish your missile ammo a bit.
