It’s been a decade since we last saw an installment in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance franchise. For a time in the mid-2010s, Marvel’s effort seemed to be shifting away from making console-level video games and instead focusing out mobile and movie-licensed games. It was especially true once the company was purchased by Disney and ended its partnership with Activision. However, things have been drastically changing in the last two years, as Marvel and Disney have slowly been making an effort in allowing other companies to develop games based on the various iconic characters they have at their disposal.
We first had the hilarious Guardians of the Galaxy game by the now-defunct Telltale Games, the fairly competent Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinity from Capcom and, last year, we had Insomniac Games deliver the excellent Spider-Man for PS4. Now, Marvel fans will be able to get their hands on the long-awaited third installment of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series, The Black Order. Today, Game Informer released a handful of information about the game, including an interview with some of the original creative team behind the original Ultimate Alliance and new gameplay footage, which you can on their website.
Unsurprisingly, Black Order is still structured just like it’s predecessors. It’s still an action-RPG dungeon crawler, similar to Diablo, where you get to control a team of 4 and takedown every henchmen and villain in the Marvel Universe. Returning elements from the past games include light puzzle elements and screen clearing team attack moves, yet being able to throw enemies has now been removed. Confirmed characters so far include the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, the X-Men, Spider-Man(both Peter Parker and Miles Morales), Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Venom, Crystal, Ms. Marvel, and Deadpool.
One new addition to Black Order are Infinity Trials, where you’ll be able to farm for experience and items from levels you’ve already beat’en. You’ll have complete certain objectives, such as kill x enemies under a time limit, to succeed. The game will also feature a new “Heroic” camera angle that focuses behind the character you control and lock to your target, but you can change it to the overhead view from past games. Game Informer promises full coverage on Black Order throughout May.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is set for release on July 19th, 2019, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
