New Callisto Protocol Combat and Gameplay Revealed CoverThis week as a part of GamesCon, developers shared new footage of Callisto Protocol gameplay and combat. The footage tempts players with a new look at the fighting and monsters players can expect to encounter in this new survival-horror experience.

The first footage of The Callisto Protocol was back in December of 2020 in the form of a cinematic trailer. This year, fans were finally able to catch a glimpse into what the game would actually entail. That is a survival-horror game in which the player takes control of Jacob Lee, a prisoner in the Black Iron Prison on Jupiter’s moon, Callisto. Players must escape this maximum security prison while also uncovering the dark secrets it has in store.

In the newest preview, we get a sneak-peek into what players can expect from the actual gameplay and combat mechanics. The trailer starts off with a focus on three key elements of combat in the game: your GRP (or “grip”), environmental combat, and melee combat.

Your GRP is a magnetic, handheld gun that can be used to both shoot enemies and also grapple them–pulling them in and tossing them across the field. One eye-catching, yet gruesome, feature of combat is the ability to use the environment to your advantage while fighting.

“Action in a survival horror game should be a delicate dance between feelings of desperate helplessness and strategic, skill-based gameplay,” writes Glen Schofield, CEO of Striking Distance Studios, “It’s a historically tough balance to get right.”

And it seems they did just that. Using their GRP to grapple enemies, players can then toss them across the field and into the whirling jaws of machines seen on the battlefield.

Another feature of this Callisto Protocol gameplay preview is melee attacks. Players will be able to use items from the environment, such as planks of wood, to strike enemies. There is also an element of stealth within the game. If you manage to sneak up on an unsuspecting target, you can use your knife to kill them in an instant.

Last, the trailer showed more elements of the environment. We see Jacob caught in a torrent, and as he slides he must avoid various obstacles in his path. Colliding with pillar after pillar, players must be diligent to avoid obstacles in their path. And if your timing is off just slightly, you may get sliced in half–literally.

The Callisto Protocol will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Xbox Series X and S on December 2nd, 2022.
