Gatwa is a Rwandan-Scottish actor known for playing Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy Sex Education, and will also feature in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie, alongside Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, and Simu Liu.
The news of Ncuti Gatwa’s announcement as the New Doctor came less than an hour after Gatwa teased his casting with an Instagram post of two heart emojis and a blue square emoji. Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies fueled further speculation by commenting, “The future is here”, below the post.

In the official announcement, Ncuti Gatwa talks about taking over as The Doctor:
There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same…as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.
Jodie Whittaker will conclude her time as the 13th Doctor during the, as yet untitled and undated, Centenary Special in Autumn 2022. Her last appearance was during the Easter Special, Legend of the Sea Devils. Chris Chibnall will also step down as Doctor Who‘s showrunner, with returning showrunner Russell T. Davies set to replace him.
In the same official announcement article, showrunner Russell T. Davies had this to say about Gatwa’s casting as the new Doctor:
The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started.
No further details were provided on exactly when Ncuti Gatwa and Russell T. Davies’ newest iteration of Doctor Who would air. However, Davies said that, “I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular”.
