Despite the huge success that was The Last of Us Part II—which continues to break one record after another, the latest being a record-breaking 14 nominations at this year’s BAFTA Awards—it seems developer Naughty Dog is not resting on its laurels.
Neil Druckmann, co-president of the company and one of the main directors and scenario writers of the company’s flagship franchises, Uncharted and The Last of Us, took to Twitter recently to give his thanks to the entire gaming community for how accepting they have been of the studio’s latest game. In attempting to give something back to fans, Druckmann pointed out that while he cannot at the moment go into specifics, there are things that the developer has already started to work on.
If you tweet at me, asking about a future project, I can’t say anything… Please stay patient. We have several cool things we can’t wait to share with you. As soon as we can, we will! ❤️ pic.twitter.com/kzzCmvS5a0

Based on this statement alone, it isn’t clear if the titles the Naughty Dog co-president is referring to are tied to existing franchises or entirely new IPs. Back in 2019, the voice actor of Nathan Drake, the main character of the Uncharted series, Nolan North, tweeted out that he’d be more than willing to return for another entry to the franchise. It was also rumored based on a Reddit post that work had already begun on the successor to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Although according to the leak, it was meant to be outsourced by Sony to another company and not developed by Naughty Dog.

Additionally, in an interview with GQ a few months back, Druckmann pointed out that the studio’s next game would either be another sequel to The Last of Us, or a completely new IP.
Given the post made by Druckmann, it seems we won’t need to wait much longer in order to find out what the company has in store for us. Whatever it is, based on its track record, it is quite promising.
