The NES Mini was a huge success and a huge failure. Though it was wildly popular, it was never able to meet the demand that existed for it, turning it into a collector's item and scalper's dream. For one reason or another, Nintendo discontinued the NES Mini as quickly as they started it. Yet it seems they are not out of the miniature retro console game yet.
Announced today, Nintendo plans to release the Super NES Classic Edition. Set to release on September 29th, 2017 for a price of $79, the mini SNES will feature 21 classic games, including Star Fox 2, a game that has never been released – until now. The full list of games is as follows:
- Super Mario World
- Super Mario Kart
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- F-Zero
- Super Metroid
- Street Fighter II Turbo
- Super Punch Out
- Super Castlevania IV
- Donkey Kong Country
- Mega Man X
- Kirby Super Star
- Final Fantasy III
- Kirby's Dream Course
- Star Fox
- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Contra III
- Secret of Mana
- Earthbound
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Star Fox 2
There's not a title on this list that is anything below great, and most are timeless classics. There are even some surprising additions, like Final Fantasy III and Super Mario RPG, since both were developed by, at least partially, Squaresoft.
It's also surprising Nintendo is even doing this at all. Though it seems like a no-brainer, given how successful the NES Mini was, Nintendo wasn't exactly making a huge profit, if any, off the tiny console. For only $60, that meant they were selling all their games for less than $2. Between production and shipping costs and licensing fees, Nintendo only saw success in the NES Mini so far as its ability to promote brand awareness.
Regardless, this console is a must have for any gamer, not just those who grew up with the console. These titles are timeless, to say the least. At the moment, it's not available to pre-order from any online retailer, but be sure to keep an eye out for when it does get announced. If you are even considering buying one, do it, because any hesitation and you may be too late.

It is an amazing collection of games, and as far as a legitimate way of getting these games goes, its irresistible.
I’ll likely try to get one, if possible.

Agreed I would love to get this too, although I am a but disappointed that Chrono Trigger didn’t make the list other than that this is a great line up of games

The fact that it includes Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy VI is huge. Crono Trigger would have been awesome, but Square-Enix was already being very, very generous by their standards. This classic compilations of games will always be missing something.
