It seems that the second half of Minecraft‘s next major update is not far off now. The Minecraft Caves and Cliffs part 2 just got its first pre-release. This update brings some massive changes to the world generation. Namely, it adds spectacularly huge new mountainous biomes, and majestic cliffs. Mojang has also added huge improvements to cave generation, including the first cave biomes in the game. These include the Lush Caves and Dripstone Caves biomes.
Minecraft Java edition Tech lead, slicedlime, has tweeted and made some videos on the pre-release:

Minecraft v1.18 pre-release 1 adds some other improvements to the game, too. If you have an existing world and start playing it in the new version, you’ll notice some of these. When new terrain generates next to an existing chunk, surface height and biomes will blend together much more seamlessly than they did in older versions of the game. Naturally, from here on out most of the changes being made will be bug fixes as Minecraft‘s next major update approaches full release.
The first part of the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs update launched back during the summer on June 8th. It added all of the new blocks and items of Caves and Cliffs to the game. Meanwhile, Mojang had to push back the new terrain generation for mountains and caves to get everything working. This arrangement allowed players to play with all of the new blocks and items in the meantime rather than have everything delayed.
The first Minecraft Caves and Cliffs part 2 pre-release means the full release is getting close now.
