2021 is shaping up to be a big year for Sega’s blue hedgehog. As part of his 30th anniversary in gaming, Minecraft adds Sonic the Hedgehog content as part of a new expansion pack. The new DLC is available now.

Sonic and friends’ designs transfer surprisingly well to the world of Minecraft. Many of the big names from the games make an appearance such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy, and Dr. Eggman. Even smaller characters such as Dr. Eggman’s robots and the adorable Chao look right at home in this new art style.

In addition to the iconic characters from the franchise, memorable zones from classic games are here as well. The trailer showed off Green Hills Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, and Sky Sanctuary. These meticulously detailed areas keep the look and feel of the original locations while adopting Minecraft’s blocky aesthetic. Furthermore, Chaos Emeralds appear to be hidden items that can be discovered when traversing the levels. The DLC also gives players the opportunity to race through the zones against friends.

The opportunities to celebrate Sonic’s birthday don’t stop with these new zones and characters. Players will have the chance to participate in special events including mini-games and other surprises on the Hive server. Fans are encouraged to check the Minecraft Twitter for updates on the proceedings.
