Metroid Prime Remastered Gets Surprise Release

Nintendo surprised fans today with the sudden release of a remaster of one of the company's most beloved games, Metroid Prime. From the total visual overhaul to updated controls, we'll break down everything you need to know about the newest entry in the Metroid series.

In a surprise reveal during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, the GameCube classic Metroid Prime was announced to be available for digital purchase immediately following the stream.

The game, (simply titled Metroid Prime Remastered,) expands upon the original game with updated visuals, modernized controls, and new difficulty modes to boot.

The original Metroid Prime, released all the way back in 2002, was extremely well-received by both critics and fans alike. However, neither the original game nor its sequels had made their way to Nintendo Switch, despite years of leaks.

This new remaster sets out to update the nearly 21-year-old game for modern audiences by reworking its assets from the ground up. This fresh coat of paint isn’t the only addition to the game, however, with brand new dual-stick controls and difficulty settings available from the beginning of the game – both firsts for the decades-old game.

The Metroid Prime series has remained mostly dormant for the last decade, with the most recent release being the Wii U port of the original trilogy, released over 6 years ago. Since then, Nintendo has announced a fourth game in the series, but with development on the game undergoing a total restart, there has not yet been any word on the fate of the franchise moving forward.

Metroid Prime Remastered is available now for digital purchase, but fans looking for a physical release will have to until the game hits store shelves on February 2nd, 2023.
