Formerly titled “Lady Layton: The Conspiracy of King Millionaire Ariadne”, Level-5 have re-uploaded the trailer for the next instalment in the Professor Layton series with a brand new name: Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy.
Layton’s Mystery Journey follows brand new character, Katrielle “Kat” Layton, on her adventures solving mysteries around bonnie old London town. Kat is the daughter of master puzzle solver, Professor Hershel Layton, and owner of her partner-in-crime-solving dog, Sherl. The duo will see Kat being comical and imaginative, while Sherl plays her straight-talking counterpart. Only Level-5 could have a partnership, and make a talking dog, the serious one.
The game will follow a slightly different direction than previous games, opting to solve various cases around London, rather than investigating one central mystery like before. Level-5 assures fans this is a main Layton game, exploring a different side to the series. Not a spin-off game like Layton Brothers: Mystery Room which starred Professor Layton’s son, and Katrielle’s brother, Alfendi Layton. This seems more in-line with a soft reboot, much like recently released Mass Effect: Andromeda. Although in this game, funny looking faces are presumed to be a lot more intentional.
The trailer mainly shows the game’s animated cutscenes, lavishly filled with the series’ usual charming character designs and masterful violin-led soundtrack. Although the trailer is in Japanese, a former version with English captions exists here. If you’re going to watch a canine character somewhat reminiscent of Detective Pikachu, leap onto a floating barge – you may as well know what he’s saying.
Finally, it’s confirmed that Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy will be released across the world, on all smart devices on July 20th 2017. It will also come out the same day on Nintendo 3DS in Japan, and worldwide some time after.
