Earlier this year it was reported that veteran Call of Duty developer Treyarch would take over development of the next instalment of the FPS franchise, believed to be Black Ops 5. However, if rumours are to be believed, Black Ops may be receiving the same reboot treatment as Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, which releases this October.
These rumours come by way of YouTuber LongSensation who claims that the next COD will indeed be a reboot of the Black Ops series, instead of a sequel. In addition to this, the game’s campaign will span 40+ years & will feature both the Korean & Vietnam Wars; suggesting that the Cold War will be the major theme holding the game together, much like the original. LongSensation shared his supposed insight in the following Twitter post:
Call of Duty 2020 has been under 2 names thus far.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Black Ops V
Set during the Cold War. Spans the entire 40+ years and incs Vietnam and Korean War. Described as even more gritty and gruesome than Modern Warfare.
I'm not joking.

Now we have no concrete proof to back these rumours and this will remain the case till early 2020 at the least. Considering these are mere rumours, lets postulate for a second. Since Activision’s return to a WW2 setting in 2017, they have been attempting to breath new life into the ageing shooter through rebooting and adapting to newer trends like Battle Royale. This year we will see a reboot to the game that propelled the franchise into the spotlight. With the return of a gritty single player campaign, Modern Warfare may end up being one of the best (if slightly controversial) games in the franchise.
The only series to match the enjoyment & storytelling of Modern Warfare was Black Ops, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this rumour ends up being true. We are close to the next generational evolution in consoles, so whether Call of Duty 2020 ends up being a reboot or sequel, it’s more than likely that it will be a cross-generation title.
Time will tell whether Treyarch’s next game is a reboot or not, but you don’t have long to wait for the next Call of Duty. The reboot of Modern Warfare releases on October 25th & can be pre-ordered on PS4, Xbox One & PC.
