Halo 5: Forge and Forza Horizon 3’s Encryption Cracked

Halo 5: Forge and Forza Horizon 3 are big titles released on Windows 10 recently, but while encryption held users back from modding these games, they've now been cracked wide open for the public.

The Universal Windows Platform has been the subject of controversy multiple times in the past, regarding it's almost required use for traditionally Xbox exclusive games to find their way to PC. Both in terms of being locked down to Windows 10 and that it often doesn't allow for modding beyond basic config editing and some little tricks here and there. Fortunately for fans of the Halo and Forza series, the game just changed in regards to how locked down the system is.

Using a built-in encrypted file system in Windows called "appx," "Halo 5: Forge" and the newly released "Forza Horizon 3" both managed to stay free of modding up until the past few days. A video was uploaded showing a modded splash screen for Forza, demonstrating that what may have been believed to be a highly protected system isn't as daunting as it appeared. While Microsoft may be disappointed that their system has been cracked so early into it's lifespan, potentially enabling easier piracy, players should be delighted to know that this also paves the way for modding of these titles. Considering the ample amount of mod support given to the original "Halo: Custom Edition" on PC in the form of extra weapons and crazy new campaigns, this may end up breathing new life into games previously rendered untouchable by the encryption and protection that was in place, and will also have an impact on "Recore" which uses the same appx encryption.
