Last weekend, head of Polyphony Digital confirmed in an interview that Gran Turismo Sport has 9.5 million users. It is great news for the studio as they almost made a 75% increase in sales in comparison to Gran Turismo 6, which sold around 5.5 million copies. The numbers aren’t exact since we’re talking about the number of users. Generally, these numbers are most times very close to the number of sales. There are people who make several accounts on the same disk. Then there are people who purchase a copy without playing the game. Some even collect but never play. In the end, it evens out.
However, the fact that Gran Turismo Sport outsold its previous title and still growing may give positive hopes for the next title. It’s fantastic to see the franchise still being active after 20 years since the launch of first title. But Gran Turismo’s rival, Forza Horizon 4, actually surpassed the number of sales long time ago. It’s probably the first time ever Forza outsold any Gran Turismo game.
The reason why Forza surpassed Gran Turismo recently could be the advertisement of Forza, and it was available on Windows 10. Also, the frequent updates is a great key factor why the game is still active. It’s just never dying. With that said, we have the Gran Turismo 7 release coming up very soon and another addition in the Forza Motorsport franchise. The odds for a comeback from Polyphony Digital isn’t impossible. Sadly, fans weren’t entirely satisfied with Forza Motorsport 7, leaving some players very disappointed. It’s a great game, but with GT7 coming up, Turn 10 Studios better put extra effort into the next game considering the low sales figures of their latest installment.
