God of War Ragnarok Will Appear on PS4 and PS5, Says Former Series Director

David Jaffe, former God of War director, has speculated that the upcoming Santa Monica Studio game, God of War Ragnarok, will be released on both PS4 and PS5. He makes this prediction based on his own experience, but also assures gamers that regardless of whether it is cross-gen or not, Santa Monica will not fail to deliver. A release date for God of War Ragnarok has yet to be revealed.

God of War Ragnarok Will Appear On PS4 and PS5, says former series Director coverGod of War Ragnarok is the sequel to God of War (2018) by Santa Monica Studio. It was revealed in 2020 as a PlayStation 5 title and is one of the most anticipated games for the console. However, with big games such as Horizon Forbidden West confirmed to be cross-gen titles that will grace both the PS4 and the PS5, there has been much speculation over whether God of War Ragnarok will also be released on the PS4.

David Jaffe is a video game designer who has worked on the Twisted Metal series but is perhaps best known for directing the first two God of War games. In a recent stream on Twitch, Jaffe speculated that Ragnarok will be cross-gen, going so far as to say “I’m sure the next God of War will be on PS4, PS5. Of course, it will be”.

In a later video (posted below), Jaffe further explains his comments. He clarifies that he does not have any insider information, but that he made a very educated guess based on his experience. He looked back to his own work on God of War II which was released in 2007 and notes that despite desires have it be a PS3 exclusive it was simply not a smart business decision to ignore the large install base of the PS2 at the time.

Jaffe also quells any fears that the game being cross-gen will result in compromises in quality. He reminds gamers that Santa Monica Studio is one of the best developers in the world and assures gamers that “your eyeballs will bleed for the new God of War” regardless of whether it is cross-gen or not.
