Gamescom 2022 has announced ‘Games: at the heart of pop culture’ as this year’s theme, as well as the event’s timetable. It’s expected to focus on games becoming a growing influence in wider pop culture, such as movies and TV shows. Mobile gaming will also be a big component of the event. It comes as no surprise considering how much the platform has grown, thanks to things like cloud gaming.

‘Healthy through games‘ is another trend at the core of Gamescom 2022. Physical health has been a hot topic with technology like motion-controlled games and VR, but mental health in gaming is becoming a bigger conversation too. With two years of lockdowns and frightening world affairs, it’s no surprise wholesome games full of cozy escapism are blowing up. Titles like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley have exploded in popularity as people turn to games to unwind from real-world stresses. It will also focus on the use of video games in treating things like ADHD and dementia.

The biggest gaming convention in the world, Gamescom draws in hundreds of thousands of attendees from across the globe. Over 500 companies have registered to take part too. Among them are Ubisoft, 2K, SEGA, XBOX, and more. It looks like both Sony and Nintendo will be skipping Gamescom 2022, however. Fans can expect new info such as release dates and trailers for hotly anticipated games, and maybe even for as-yet-unannounced ones.

Devcom will start the night before the main event, dedicated to game developers more than fans. Then comes Opening Night Live on August 24, a live-streamed event hosted by Geoff Keighley. This is usually where we see the biggest announcements for upcoming games. From there, the Gamescom 2022 floor opens up to ticketholders.

Over 500 companies will be in attendance - from developers and publishers, to sponsors and merchandise providers.
