Microsoft takes the crown for best racing game of the year

While Forza Horizon 3 has only been out for a couple of days, it is already being regarded as one of the best racing games in recent years. This is according to critical reviews, as well as from people who have been playing the game since September 23 on the PC, as buyers of the Ultimate Edition of the game granting them early access.

The game has a stellar score of 91 on review aggregator Metacritic, which indicates ‘Universal Acclaim.’ And if you’re someone who just has a hard time trusting review scores from tech journalists, the user score on Metacritic is also not too shabby, standing at a solid 8.6. This is for the Xbox One version, but people who’ve been able to play it on the PC are saying similar things, and you can bet the added frame-rate and quality settings, not to mention resolutions greater than 1080p will make the game even better on a capable gaming rig.

The Forza Horizon series, which began as an off-shoot of the Forza Motorsport franchise, was intended to be a more fun and less-restrictive experience compared to the Motorsport titles. While Motorsport focused on simulating realistic racing mechanics, Horizon was much looser in its approach. Think of FIFA vs. FIFA Street games.

So none would’ve thought that a Horizon game would ever eclipse a Motorsport one in terms of adhering to racing principles. One of the greatest achievements of Forza Horizon 3 remains the fact that racing aficionados are drooling over the game’s emphatic mechanics.

Horizon 3 takes cues, not only from other racing titles, but also from gamers belonging to different genres. For example, reviewers have noted that the open-world aspect of the game is one of its strongest suits, a formula which has nearly been perfected by developers Playground Games. It is difficult to see the studio top it off with the now-inevitable next entry in the series.

Forza Horizon 3 is available for the Xbox One, while the PC version goes live tomorrow on September 27. The game is part of Microsoft’s Play Anywhere initiative. Check out the 4K 60fps footage from the PC version of the game below:
