New Footage Revealed for Final Fantasy VII Remake

Without a doubt, Final Fantasy VII has become one of the most iconic video games of all time. The story of Cloud and friends attempting to take down the Shinra Electric Power Company still holds a spot in the hearts of millions everywhere. Since its release, it has been hailed as not only the best game in the Final Fantasy franchise but one of the greatest achievements in the medium. Even if you’ve never played Final Fantasy VII, you’ve at least heard of it.

Within the last few years, Cloud and his arch-nemesis, Sephiroth, have become two of the most well-known video game characters. Along with the critical acclaim, Final Fantasy VII received an animated film sequel, a PS2 spin-off that focused on fan-favorite character Vincent Valentine and a prequel PSP game. Years after its release, fans have been clamoring for a remake of the beloved classic, especially after Sony re-made the game’s opening to show off the PS3’s graphical capability in 2005. Fast forward to E3 2015 and fans finally had their wishes granted when Square Enix announced a Final Fantasy VII remake would be coming to PS4. Since then, we haven’t seen hide nor hair of it. However, during the tail end of PlayStation’s recent “State of Play” presentation, we finally got a teaser of the new Final Fantasy VII remake.

In it, we see the opening hours of the original re-created in Unreal Engine 4, featuring some of the voice actors from the various FF VII spin-offs (including Steve Burton as Cloud from Advent Children), reprising their roles in this remake. We also get a quick glimpse of gameplay, which is now in real-time as opposed to the turn-based combat system of the original. It looks oddly similar to the combat system found in Final Fantasy XV.

The trailer also announced that we would be seeing more of the remake in June, so stay tuned for Square Enix’s E3 press conference. While we only got a minute of footage, we can’t help but get excited for what’s to come. Are you excited for the Final Fantasy VII remake? Leave a comment below telling us what you think.
