In a recent Famitsu Magazine Interview, one of Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s directors, Tetsuya Nomura, talked about the game’s sequel already being in development. There were many other things exposed as well, such as pulling back on seeing the Avalanche Hideout and cutting a battle with Roche.

According to the interview translations, Nomura stated that they want to release part 2 as soon as possible. The developers at Square Enix know how much quality was put into the remake, and want to keep improving it for the sequel. It also seems like we’ll get a clear path for the release when the sequel is fully announced to the public.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s producer Yoshinori Kitase was even quoted saying this,

The new story of Final Fantasy 7 has only just begun.

The second game will show new ideas for the story since the remake already deviates slightly from the original game. This quote seems to confirm that they will continue to make new and exciting changes.

Apart from this sequel information, the interview dives into behind the scenes from the development of FF7 Remake. In the original, the Avalanche Hideout was accessible to Cloud. Instead, the Remake cut that part out to show the distance between the mercenary and the eco-terrorist organization. Also, they created a concept for a battle with Roche in Chapter 14, but scrapped it due to having no roads for motorcycles in the slums.
