Id software has stated in the past that they are working on their next big project. Since Doom has always been an iconic series to id Software, it’s fairly obvious that they are working on a sequel to their last major Doom project, Doom Eternal. Throughout the years, there have been some information regarding on the next id Software’s major title, and this article is going to accumulate those details to get an idea of what the next Doom will be like. It should be said that things could be subject to change, but if you’re curious of any sort of information for the new Doom, this is what this article is for. Doom: Year Zero Is The Title

Recently, a Microsoft document that has been leaked and revealed tons of information regarding a new Xbox and unreleased Bethesda titles. One of the unreleased Bethesda titles was supposedly a successor to Doom Eternal called Doom: Year Zero. The new Doom was supposed to be released in an estimate fiscal year 2023 and it would have two downloadable content expansions afterwards; following the same formart as Doom Eternal. As of right now, this document is certainly off with its estimation, but it is obvious that the next big id Software project will be another Doom project and it does have a title that comes along with it.

As of June 9, 2024, Doom: The Dark Ages is the official title of id Software’s latest Doom project. The game is heading towards a 2025 release.

Various Hugo Martin Comments

Doom Eternal creative director Hugo Martin has done playthroughs of Doom Eternal and its Ancient Gods expansions that can be found on YouTube. Throughout these videos, Martin has commented certain bits of information on the new Doom. During the end credits of the base game’s final level, Martin admits he only has interest in making new Doom titles.”It’s hard for me to imagine working on anything else,” Martin said. The creative director has also stated that the new Doom will feel more equivalent to driving a monster truck rather than a race car which is an analogy for Doom Eternal’s gameplay loop.

New Doom, New Engine

It seems like id Software will be using a new engine just like what the previous modern Doom projects did. Doom 2016 used id Tech 6, Doom Eternal used id Tech 7, and that means Doom: Year Zero will be using id Tech 8. There’s no information whether this engine will be supported for the previous console generation like how both Doom 2016 and Eternal had. With that mentioned, Doom: Year Zero will be using another engine, and possibly the game will be more designed for the Xbox Series consoles and Playstation 5’s hardware because id Software has yet to make a game that has done that job.

IDKFA Trademarked

As of January 9, 2024, Zenimax Media Inc. has trademarked “IDKFA” which is a cheat code in the old Doom games where the player has access to all weapons and keyes. It seems like a Doom Eternal sequel is most likely a project that will be announced by this year. It’s also obvious that a brand new Doom title is most likely going to happen due to these document files being confirmed.
