EGX Birmingham 2022 Expo Cancelled

Despite tickets only going on sale two weeks ago, organisers have made the decision to cancel EGX Birmingham 2022 over Covid-19 concerns and a reported hesitancy from their partner companies. Anyone who has already purchased a ticket will receive a full refund automatically.

EGX Birmingham 2022 Expo Cancelled

EGX has confirmed that their 2022 Birmingham show, set to take place this March, will not be going ahead. The team cited concerns about Omicron having a detrimental knock-on effect on the event as the reason for the cancellation.

Tickets for EGX Birmingham 2022 only went on sale two weeks ago. The event was set to be a continuation of EGX Rezzed, an indie developer-focused exhibition that has been running since 2012. Early last year, the organisers announced they were renaming the show EGX Birmingham to reflect its relocation from London. They also planned to expand the show beyond the traditional indie showcases to include some spring releases from AAA developers.

Now, EGX has announced a ‘postponement’ of the event, which will now not take place until 2023. Instead, the team is focusing on preparations for EGX London, the company’s larger exposition due to take place this September.

The decision was made to cancel the show due to many of its partners not wanting to return to an in-person format. Current UK restrictions would not have prohibited the event from taking place, but the recent surge in Omicron cases has once again raised concerns about large gatherings.

‘At the end of the day, we felt that we wouldn’t have been able to put on the awesome show you expect from us without them,’ the statement reads.

In response, many people online were quick to point out the perceived failings of EGX 2021. Following various event cancellations in 2020, EGX 2021 was the company’s first attempt to return to a standard in-person expo. Ultimately, the show was not a success with fans; it received a lot of negative feedback for its lackluster attendance from console and AAA games developers.

EGX 2021 | 7th - 10th October | Tickets On Sale Now

Given the backlash last year, it’s possible that EGX was hoping to avoid a similar situation for EGX Birmingham 2022. To help appease fans, the announcement also confirms that anyone who has already bought tickets will receive an automatic refund.

The statement concludes by promising further details on the London event soon and closing with, ‘Until we’re together again; take care, stay safe, and carry on smashing through levels.’
